The 2nd best time is right now. Thanks for your sharing tips. I have struggled with my 2 dogs all day long and your article saved me a life!

Did you ever get a response to your question? This is the exactly the issue we now have with our Lab puppy. He was totally fine to be left when we first picked him up. Now we have a 13 week old puppy who cannot be left without barking constantly throughout the night unless we sleep next to him. I’m not sure whether we need to go back and start from scratch or treat it as a different issue. Where did you get to?

After the first three nights of our new 8 wk puppy being very unsettled. I found your article and followed it to the letter. We now have a puppy who is happy in his crate, sleeps the whole night and various naps throughout the day. He is now able to be left in it while I have a shower/ clean/ prepare dinner etc. He seems to be a pretty fast learner!
I cannot thank you enough for your sensible, easily understood step by step instructions aimed at people like me, not professional trainers but a caring owner trying to do the best by their pet. Some articles I have found make owners feel like idiots, needless to say yours does not!

I have a question as I’m not sure to continue as we do or if we can still change things.
We picked up our 8 week old labradoodle on Thursday.. during the day she was very happy in the crate and we could easily leave the door shut and step away etc. She napped in there too..
We decided to leave her down stairs and she went absolutely bonkers..and I mean bonkers! I now know we made a mistake! After 30 min or so there was a tiny pause and my partner decided to sleep on the floor with her and she was much better.
The following day we checked with the vet to carry on like this or if we need to change something..
Since than we now leave her crate open during the night and the day and she does sleep in it.. She is downstairs and we are upstairs at night and this seems to go very well. She happily still chills and sleep during the day in the crate but like I said always with the door open and we slowly training now to close the door etc.
My question is: should we just continue with what we doing or can I still take her upstairs now and start fresh with all the steps?
Many thanks!
Marie

This is a really massive and well-written article on puppy crate training, I actually learned a thing or two and that part where you mentioned sitting next to the crate with the pup inside!

I think this would help my dog in the early stages as I plan to put him in a crate – I do a 9-5 job.

Just wanted to get your opinion on something – I was just reading this article about pros and cons of crate training and the guy mentioned that crate training him could cause some illnesses like diabetes.

Would love to know what you think about it if this is true? Thanks! Can’t wait to hear your reply as I plan to start putting him in a crate after the new year.

We have a 3 year old Cockapoo who is crate trained. He stays in there through the day when we are at work (we have a dog walker and we also come home for lunch every day). He also sleeps on there at night.. it’s his safe place. We are thinking of introducing a puppy working cocker spaniel who we also intend to crate train. Have you got any advice on how we should go about doing this please? Should their crates be close together or will the puppy crying through the night potentially disrupt and unsettle out cockapoo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Steph

I’ve remained at stage 1-2 for awhile as she was having a lot of separation anxiety in the first month or so that I owned her. Anyway will it make crate training anymore difficult if I don’t crate her at night? At this point she’s not having accidents in the bed and I’m okay with having her in the bed with me but at this point wondering if it’s okay to skip the “crate at night” part. Thanks!
