You’ve made me a crossover believer.
I’d like to point out that in controlled environments, like zoos, the animal isn’t expected to deal with a surprise. Imagine a strange child running towards the animal, for instance.
It may be important to let the animal know, unequivocally, that growling or snapping at the child is unacceptable. Negative reinforcement should be applied as immediately as possible.
Of course, you could train the animal ahead of time to avoid such a situation using positive reinforcement, but it’s impossible to train for every possible incident.

I am hoping to find the right method of dog training for my Golden Retriever puppy. With that considered, I must then make sure that the method I’m going to choose is safe and effective for my dog. Perhaps, I shall then bring him to a center to see which one works best for him.

Recently I opt for dog obedience training for my dog as he was behaving weird and become very aggressive. I have tried to train him by myself but, after lot of unsuccessful attempts, I have taken help from Sam Ivy consultants and their in-home training is amazing.

Anyways, thanks for sharing the great stuff and I am looking forward to your next post!

But, I see more to it than that. I worked for several months using traditional training methods to train up two English Bulldogs. At the end, I had them off leash trained to heel (individually or side by side), sit, down, stay, stand, come (individually or together), walk backwards in front of me, and to back up away from me until commanded to stop, sit or down. For their “final exam” I took them to the top of the Caesar’s Palace parking structure, down the elevator to casino level, through the casino, and all around the Forum Shops. It was a busy, noisy, elbow to elbow kind of day there. They performed beautifully, and demonstrated all of the above mentioned behaviors notwithstanding the huge amount of distractions all around them. And, I had been told that English Bulldogs couldn’t be trained.

From this, and my experience in the years that followed, I have come to understand that there are two aspects to dog “training.” One is wrote learning. That is, repetitive training with rewards, praise, and corrections. The other is voluntary compliance, based on the dog’s eagerness to please its master. Note that the wrote training involves all three motivators, reward, praise, and corrections. And, note that a dog’s desire to please its master necessarily involves the dominance aspect of the master/dog relationship. In other words, it’s all there. I think attempts to break the training technique down to focus on just one aspect is a mistake.

Finally, I always treated my dogs as I would another human, with love and respect. I talked to them, and they learned a vocabulary from that. In the end, most of us want a loving pet that will behave in an appropriate manner in most situations. At home, it’s much more satisfying to have a dog that will comply with a direction such as “Please come over here and sit down next to me,” than it is to have a dog that requires specific command orders. But when out and about, it’s much better to have a dog that listens for, and obeys specific commands. With eclectic training, you can have both.

When I was first training my dog, we used this method. She didn’t respond as well if we didn’t get her treats. So now we just raise her like another child. She eats after we do but she is loved and played with just like any other child.
