It’s time for regulators to step in and legislate parameters for breeders to produce healthy canine body shapes.

An example that you know of is called “anecdotal evidence” in other words, your story. A report of scientific findings is science, and based on many many examples compared to known groups.

What I am saying is that sure, there are animals who AREN’T affected in these ways. And better breeders. But that distracts from the main issue, we shouldn’t be breeding animals which suffer, can suffer, tend to suffer. All that. Every choice we make has a consequence.

Another choice people make is to “help” a family who “accidentally” has a litter of kittens turn up from their cat. It’s not helping. It’s not helping the problem stop, and it’s not helping the family realise what they are doing by continually failing to sterilise their cat.

Cats are ending up abused, neglected, abandoned and breeding like mad in the wild, devastating wildlife ( especially here in Australia). If we simply say no to that random heart tugging kitten offer, even when it is put into our hands to have a hold, we teach the owner something about consequences, and help all future cats and wildlilfe.

Say no to neighbourhood kittens, and don’t offer solutions of any sort. People need to realise the responsibility that comes with cats, and work out after having to call in the rescue charities, that their cat needs to be neutered, now and in the family’s future. I get that cats can be hard to catch before breeding, as they can breed so young. Ask a vet’s advice, and don’t let it get away from you.

I keep hearing they have problems with some but it mite be in the breeding, as I haven known quite a few and none of the ones I knew have had a problem. Mickey my fathers dog could out run dogs that were much larger than him. and another friend had one they used for deer hunting for many years and the dog would run for hours and never had a problem.

No Mitsue, I’m afraid you may not copy any of the text or images on this website. They are all subject to copyright and may not be reproduced by anyone.

However, I do appreciate you asking and not just taking. I recommend you look at the Institute of Canine Biology and consider one of their courses for more information. They may be willing to let you use some of their material. Good luck with your English course – Best wishes, Pippa

I am wondering if you allow me to use the text and download the photos in this site, and put them in my slides in my English class.
I am teaching English at Osaka University of Economics, a college in Osaka, Japan.
And I would like to teach the problems of selective breeding through my English course.
I appreciate it if you allow me to download the photos as It would be easier for students to look at the photos while reading the text.
Would you reply to me?

Thankfully my breed, Leonberger does not have any of these problems, BUT it is very scary to see how the show ring is promoting dogs with too much skin on their heads and changing the type in general.

Disgusting.

As a child we had a GSD but with a healthy level back & a Dachshund, although she had a long back was well able to run, jump, play, dig, etc. Now the GSDs look very odd especially when they run with a severely sloping back. And the Dachshunds backs seem to have got even longer. Very sad
