We live in NJ and have a big yard and plenty of places to exercise the new puppy.

Got her at 8 wks old. I’ve had 2 other mini aussies. A Blue Merle & a black & brown ines. But this puppy is now 9 months old. She has a longer body & her nose is longer & pointy. She’s beautiful but I’m wondering if she really us a mini aussie.

Hi Karen, your post hit my broken heart. I had a Shetland Sheepdog named Lucy. The breeder gave her that name because as a puppy she had the beautiful red tawny fur and a personality of Lucille Ball. Of course, I especially loved saying, “Lucy, I’m home.” after a hard day at work. She had an unusual cough that spanned a couple of months with one chest X-ray taken. Another visit and the Vet diagnosed severely swollen spleen – which explained her loss of appetite. Lucy ate EVERYTHING. She liked the strawberries in my yard, the neighbor raspberries and had a nose that worked like target vision in detecting chocolate. As you may know, they are very agile and smart. I had an expensive chocolate bar inside a birthday card, inside its envelope, in a bag – on top of the dining room table. When I came, the items on the table were in order as I left – but the gift bag; envelop card were torn, with bits of foil everywhere – and no evidence of the chocolate bar. One day she wandered off and when she returned, there were tomatoe seeds on her darling chin. Yes – she went to the neighbors for a veggie snack. The ultrasound a biopsy confirmed mythicized lymphoma. I got meds that had minimal impact and she passed a few days later. She was my roommate and companion for 12 years! I still have dreams about her and the painful mourning continues. I am not ready for another dog but am considering a Mini Australian Shepard (I believe when they are mini or toy they are considered American Shepherd) for the same reasons you shared.

I highly recommend you explore Shetland Sheepdogs as a wonderful option – very similar to Aussie but different enough to minimize the comparison to Casey.

He lived to be 14 years and three months. He was my best friend and I miss him terribly. He was smart, very loyal, and obedient. He had two different colored eyes and looked just as beautiful old as he did young. He was very easy to train and always there for me after my husband died. He did shed but was worth putting up with for this amazing dog. I keep thinking of getting another one but I’m afraid I will think it’s my Casey. It might not be the well behaved dog I owned. The trouble is I never thought of him as a dog but as my son. ❣️

I have another older Aussie shepherd mix with border collie. Great combo. Best of both breeds.

If I were able to care for one now I’d get another one. I once found a 3 to 4 month old Tri-color Aussie pup. She was just beginning to lose her baby teeth. She was wandering beside an exit ramp off the interstate and I took her home for my then 12-yr old daughter because she’d never had a dog. I took Puppy to the vet, got her checked out, and vaccinated. She made a wonderful addition to our little family. Puppy turned out to be the most amazing, loving, SUPER INTELLIGENT, and most easily trained dog I ever had. At age 6 she was almost as energetic and playful as the day I found her. She required lots of attention and exercise but she was so worth my time. She was very loving, funny, and she had the best temperament (got along well with people and other dogs… but NOT cats or squirrels – LOL!). I was terribly heartbroken when she died. AUSSIES really do make the BEST PET FRIENDS!
